12 Sundarbans pirates, including Nana Bhai gang chief surrender with arms

The chief of the notorious Nanna Bhai gang in the Sundarbans, Jahangir Molla, along with 11 other active members of the gang, has surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard with a large cache of arms and ammunition.
On Thursday, Coast Guard Commander Md Mansurun Mahdin, ND, PSC, BN, and Executive Officer of BCGS Kamruzzaman held a press briefing and presented the surrendered pirates.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said, "12 active members of the Nanna Bhai gang, including its chief Jahangir Molla, surrendered to the Coast Guard at around 6pm on Tuesday (September 8) in the Dhansiddhir Char area of the Sundarbans under Mongla Police Station in Bagerhat."
At the time of their surrender, they handed over one eight-shooter, one six-shooter, one four-shooter, one side-hammer pistol, one bolt-action pistol, two M3 gas guns, two 7.65mm pistols, two one-shooters, two air guns, 212 live cartridges, 29 blank cartridges, 20 rounds of 7.65mm pistol ammunition, five rounds of 8mm live ammunition, 413 rounds of air-gun pellets, four pistol magazines, two air-gun magazines and six walkie-talkies with chargers.
The surrendered gang members were identified as Jahangir Molla alias Rahmat, 36, Saifullah Molla, 39, Ekhlasur Rahman, 38, Robiul Islam, 35, Mofizul Islam, 35, Azim Uddin Gazi, 37, and Abdur Rahman Sheikh, 36, all residents of Paikgachha and Dumuria upazilas of Khulna.
The others are Shafiqul Islam, 53, Mintu Gazi, 39, Azizul Gazi, 35, and Shahjahan Mali, 35, residents of Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira, and Azizur Rahman, 45, of Rampal upazila in Bagerhat.
As members of the Nanna Bhai gang, they had allegedly been involved in robbery in the Sundarbans for a long time and had been abducting fishermen and forest resource collectors and demanding ransom.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard has so far arrested 29 forest pirates with a large quantity of arms and ammunition through two special operations-“Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield.”
During the operations, 42 people held hostage by the pirates were rescued alive. They were provided with necessary medical assistance before being safely handed over to their families, he said.
Commander Md Mansurun Mahdin urged all active forest pirates in the Sundarbans to surrender to the Bangladesh Coast Guard and return to normal life.
“Those who surrender will be given opportunities for rehabilitation through the higher authorities,” he said.
On the other hand, those who continue their criminal activities will face strict legal action under the government’s zero-tolerance policy, he added.
