Hafez killed after being run over by truck in Sonargaon

A motorcyclist was killed after being run over by a speeding truck on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Thursday.

The accident occurred at around 11:30 AM in the Pirojpur area under Pirojpur Union of the upazila. Police later arrested the truck driver along with the truck involved in the accident.

The deceased was identified as Hafez Maulana Mufti Al Zahid, 35. He was the only son of Md Shah-Alam Mia of Noyakamta village under Burichang Police Station in Cumilla.

According to police and the victim’s family, Mufti Zahid attended an Islamic religious gathering as a guest at a madrasa in Kabilganj area of Mogorapara Union in Sonargaon on Wednesday. As the programme ended late at night, he stayed at the madrasa.

At around 10:30 AM on Thursday, he left for his home in Cumilla on his motorcycle. When he reached the Pirojpur area of the highway, a speeding truck hit his motorcycle, causing him to be thrown onto the highway. He was then run over by the truck and died on the spot.

The victim’s father-in-law arrived at the scene after receiving the news and confirmed his identity.

Kanchpur Highway Police Station Sergeant Kajal Kanti Nath said police reached the scene after receiving information about the accident from locals at around noon on Thursday.

Later, police arrested the truck driver along with the truck from the Meghna Toll Plaza area. The driver’s name and identity could not immediately be confirmed.

The body was recovered and sent to a hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action in connection with the incident is underway.
