Rapist in Jamalpur sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk.4 lakh

A court in Jamalpur has sentenced Aslam Hossain to life imprisonment and fined him Tk 4 lakh for raping a woman.

Judge Muhammad Abdul Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 in Jamalpur announced the verdict on Thursday (September 10) afternoon. The convict, Aslam Hossain (33), is the son of Haidar Ali from the Janakipur Soloi Mondalpara area of Bakshiganj Upazila, Jamalpur.

State counsel Advocate Fajrul Haque stated that Aslam Hossain had repeatedly made indecent proposals to the victim. Concerned for her safety, her parents subsequently arranged her marriage. While she was living with her husband, the accused created discord in her marital life by making various remarks and stories about her to her husband, until the victim eventually divorced her husband on July 10, 2023. The victim began living at her father's house afterwards.

On the night of July 20 of that year, the accused entered the victim's room and raped her under the pretext of marriage. Locals later detained Aslam Hossain and handed him over to the police. Two days after the incident, on July 22, the victim's father filed a rape case at Bakshiganj Police Station.

After hearing testimonies from the nine witnesses, the judge sentenced Rahim to life imprisonment, alongside a fine of Tk. 4 lakh on September 10, in his presence.
