NSTU observes World Suicide Prevention Day

NOAKHALI, Sept 10: Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) observed World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday with an awareness rally aimed at promoting mental health and suicide prevention.

NSTU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Golam Rabbani, who attended as chief guest, said preventing suicide requires individual awareness as well as social and institutional efforts.

He urged university clubs and organisations to regularly conduct programmes on suicide prevention and mental health. He also called on students and staff to watch for signs of hopelessness or depression among friends, family members and colleagues.

He also said the university is placing particular emphasis on providing mental health services and counselling for female students.

Pro VC Prof Dr Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Hasan Uddin, Proctor AFM Arifur Rahman and Chief Medical Officer (Admin) Dr Mohammad Selim Hossain attended, along with faculty members, students and staff.

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10. This year’s theme was “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”.
