Two female dancers were allegedly gang-raped after being invited to perform at a wedding programme in Sarail of Brahmanbaria. One of the victims is a teenage girl, police said.

According to police and the case statement, the incident took place between Thursday afternoon and evening on the Titas River in Shahbazpur area of Sarail upazila.

The victims, residents of Chandina in Cumilla, reportedly work as professional dancers and perform at events across the country on a contractual basis.

According to the case statement, a man named Rakib Mia contacted the victims after obtaining their phone numbers from their Facebook page and offered them Tk 9,000 to perform at a wedding in Shahbazpur. They arrived at the Sarail Bishwaroad area on Thursday afternoon and were taken by Rakib and his associates in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to a bridge in Shahbazpur.

They were later put on a motorised boat on the pretext of being taken quickly to the wedding venue. When the boat reached the middle of the Titas River, the engine was switched off and the two women were allegedly taken inside the covered section of the boat and sexually assaulted by Rakib and his associates.

According to the case statement, a male member accompanying the women tried to intervene but the accused allegedly threatened to kill him with sharp weapons.

The alleged assault continued from around 5:30pm to 7pm, according to the case statement. The victims were later dropped off near Bhuiya Ghat along the Titas River in Kunda area of Nasirnagar around 8pm, after which the accused left.

The victims initially went to Nasirnagar Police Station seeking legal assistance but were advised to file the case with Sarail Police Station as the alleged incident occurred within its jurisdiction.

A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against Rakib Mia as the prime accused and four to five unidentified others.

Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Manjur Kader Bhuiyan said one person had been arrested and police were working to arrest the others.

Brahmanbaria Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Jahangir Alam said one person was arrested following an investigation based on the case. He said the suspect's identity was not being disclosed for the sake of the investigation and to facilitate the arrest of the other accused.

Nasirnagar Police Station OC Shahinul Islam said the victims were advised to take legal action at Sarail Police Station as the alleged crime occurred within that station's jurisdiction.
