
The body of Rakibuzzaman Raki, member secretary of the Shailkupa municipal unit of Chhatra Dal, was recovered from the river near Laxmikunda Union on Sunday morning.
Raki was a resident of Kabirpur Madhyamik Vidyalaypara in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah.
Khandakar Shafiqul Islam, in-charge of the Laxmikunda Naval Police Outpost, confirmed the recovery. He said the body was taken into police custody and would be handed over to the family after completion of legal procedures.
According to police, local people spotted the body floating in the branch of the Padma River on Sunday morning and informed the authorities.
On Friday morning, more than 100 people had set out on a trawler trip from Katlagari in Kushtia’s Garai River to Rupur in Pabna. On their way back at around 9:30 PM, the engine-powered trawler collided with Pillar No. 5 of the Hardinge Bridge in Pakshi, causing several passengers, including Raki, to fall into the river.
Three people went missing following the accident. Later, naval police and Fire Service personnel rescued two of them-Mohammad Liton, 38, and Mohammad Wahab, 45-alive.
