A cultural programme for the freshers’ reception at Brahmanbaria Government College will be held at the hostel field behind the college following objections from a Qawmi students’ organisation.
A large tent has been set up on the main college field for the discussion session, while preparations for the cultural programme are under way at the hostel venue ahead of Monday’s event.
The Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad submitted separate memoranda on Friday to Brahmanbaria-3 MP Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol and District Council Administrator Sirajul Islam, objecting to the proposed concert.
On Saturday, the MP held talks with leaders of the organisation, after which it was decided that the cultural programme would be held at the hostel field.
Several college students said the event was being organised by the students and would be held peacefully and in a disciplined manner.
One student said students of all religions study at the college and that the programme was intended to preserve cultural activities while respecting religious values.
Another student said decisions about welcoming new students should be made by the college authorities and students, without outside interference.
A student said the southern campus was enclosed by boundaries, making it easier to prevent outsiders from entering and ensure students’ safety.
College Vice-Principal Prof Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain said the college had never described the event as a concert.
“We have mentioned fresher reception, a cultural programme and a tree plantation programme in the invitation. There is no mention of a concert,” he said, adding that the programme was being organised by the students.
The controversy comes after an incident on August 18, when a cultural programme at Brahmanbaria Police Lines was disrupted following objections from students of a nearby madrasa over loud music. A clash subsequently broke out between police and madrasa students, leaving several police personnel and 30 madrasa students injured.
On May 30, a screening of the popular film *Bonlota Express* at Annada Government High School in Brahmanbaria town was also cancelled following objections from Qawmi students.
