Fertilizer shortage sparks farmers’ protest in Kaliganj

Farmers protested over a fertilizer shortage at a dealer point in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah, on Sunday, prompting The agriculture office later arranged distribution.

The protest took place at Dudharajpur village under Jamal Union. Dealer Shahidul Islam was absent that day but claimed he had already distributed his stock.

Farmers said they were promised fertilizer on Sunday but were later told distribution had ended on Friday and Saturday. Later farmers opened the dealer’s godown forcefully and found around 60 sacks of stored fertilizer.

They alleged that Shahidul registered different names and sold fertilizer at higher prices.

Shahidul had a 64-tonne allocation for September and lifted 58 tons in the first week, equal to around 1,200 sacks.

Local media workers found phone numbers for only about 5% of recipients in the distribution register. Of nine farmers contacted, only one confirmed receiving fertilizer, while The other eight numbers were switched off.

Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer Arifat Jamil said more fertilizer was being brought and officials were checking the register for irregularities.

Farmers are also facing shortages of urea, TSP and DAP during the Aman season. Earlier, on September 5, farmers blocked a road at Garaganj Bazar in Shailkupa over a similar shortage.
