Boris Johnson, EU delegates narrowly miss Russian strike

According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, a diplomatic train conveying Johnson, Bildt, former CIA Director David Petraeus, and senior EU security advisers had departed Yahodyn station ahead of schedule following real-time security warnings.

The international delegation was returning from Kyiv after participating in the annual Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference.

Shortly after the diplomatic convoy cleared the sector, a Russian drone detonated against a stationary locomotive at Yahodyn station, situated approximately two kilometers from the Polish border. Early warning protocols allowed railway personnel to evacuate passengers, resulting in zero recorded casualties.

"It is highly probable that the Russian drone's intended target was in fact the diplomatic train, which had departed the station earlier than scheduled," Ukrzaliznytsia stated in an official update.

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt posted video footage of the aftermath on X, noting that their train had received an evacuation warning prior to crossing into Poland.

Condemning the incident, Boris Johnson posted on X: "I don't know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning. What we can say for sure is that this is the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day - even on civilian railways."

The strike occurred amid broader aerial attacks along the border corridor, which also forced the temporary closure of the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing after a drone hit a commercial vehicle less than a mile from Polish territory.
