At least 15 BNP leaders and activists, including the general secretary of the district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), were injured in a clash between two rival factions of the party in Panchagarh early Monday.
The incident took place following a BNP discussion in the district earlier in the day. Tensions reportedly escalated over remarks made by Asadullah Asad, general secretary of the Boda upazila BNP unit, at the meeting.
According to police, supporters of Panchagarh-1 constituency MP Barrister Naushad Zamir brought out a procession from Tentulia Bus Stand later at night.
When the procession reached the M.R. College intersection, the supporters were confronted by activists backing Water Resources State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad, triggering a chase and counter-chase between the two groups.
The rival factions reportedly exchanged brickbats and attacked each other with sticks, leaving 15 people injured on both sides.
Police later intervened and brought the situation under control.
The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
