Police arrested three people after leaders and activists of the banned Jubo League and Chhatra League held a rally in Noakhali on Monday welcoming former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's return to Bangladesh.
The rally began in front of White Hall on the Maijdee-Sonapur road around 6:30am and ended at Godar Mosque. The participants later held a brief gathering in front of the residence of BNP Vice-Chairman and Noakhali-4 MP Mohammad Shahjahan.
According to eyewitnesses, around 100 activists took part in the rally. Participants carried banners and placards featuring photographs of former Noakhali-4 Awami League MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, district Awami League President Khairul Anam Selim and former district council chairman Abdul Wadud Pintu, among others.
Some participants, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the rally was organised under the direction of district Jubo League Joint Convener Ekramul Haque Biplob and led by former district Chhatra League General Secretary Fazlul Haque Sujon.
Police later arrested Mithu Das, 45, Palash Das, 32, and Alauddin, 36, in connection with the rally. A case has been filed against them.
Sudharam Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nazrul Islam confirmed the rally and said police had filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
