SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, Sept 14: More than 500 illegal structures, including fruit shops, built on Roads and Highways Department (RHD) land beside the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sonargaon were demolished on Saturday.

The eviction drive was conducted from morning to afternoon at Mogorapara Chowrasta through a mobile court led by Mamun Sarker, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Sonargaon Circle.

The joint operation was conducted by the Sonargaon Upazila Administration and the RHD. Alrazi, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Narayanganj RHD, officials of the upazila administration and a large number of police personnel from Sonargaon Police Station were present.

Mamun Sarker said some influential locals had long been occupying RHD land beside the highway, constructing makeshift structures and renting them out to small traders.

“This occupation was creating problems for pedestrians using the footpath. The occupants were also earning lakhs of taka every month by exploiting government land,” he said.

The illegal structures were also causing severe traffic congestion every day on the service lane and feeder roads around Mogorapara Chowrasta, he said.

“Considering these issues, the upazila administration and the RHD jointly conducted the eviction drive,” Mamun said.

He said more than 500 illegal structures built on RHD land beside the highway had been removed through the mobile court.
“The eviction drive will continue,” he added.
