A woman and her nephew were hacked to death allegedly over a family property dispute in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on Monday evening.
The incident took place in the Daranipara area of Babutipara union at around 7:30pm, said Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mashrurul Haque.
The deceased were identified as Khaleda Akter, 70, daughter of Jasim Uddin, and her nephew Manjurul Alam Titu, 36, son of her brother Bachchu Mia.
According to relatives, Khaleda had been involved in a long-running dispute with her brother Abu Mia over ancestral property. She went to their father’s house in the afternoon to demand her share of the property, triggering an argument.
At one stage, Abu allegedly attacked his sister with a sharp weapon. Titu rushed to save his aunt, but Abu also attacked him.
Relatives took the two to Gouripur Health Complex in the neighbouring Daudkandi upazila, where doctors declared them dead.
Hazera Akter, elder sister of Titu’s wife, said Abu attacked Titu when he tried to save Khaleda.
Health complex official Habibur Rahman said the two were brought to the hospital dead. Their bodies were kept at the facility.
OC Mashrurul Haque said he was heading to the scene after learning about the deaths and could not provide further details until he arrived.
