JCD activists siege SP office in Chapainawabganj after traffic row

Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) surrounded the Chapainawabganj Superintendent of Police (SP) office for approximately an hour on Monday night (September 14), following an alteraction over the seizure of an unregistered motorcycle belonging to a senior student leader.

According to police and local sources, traffic police led by TSI Ujjwal Kumar stopped the motorcycle of Chapainawabganj District JCD General Secretary Akhtaruzzaman Akhtar at a routine checkpoint in the city's New Market area on Monday afternoon.

Police stated that the vehicle was impounded after Akhtar failed to produce valid registration documents, leading to a heated argument at the scene.

In response, over 50 JCD activists gathered in front of the SP office later that evening, blockading the main gate and effectively trapping police officers inside the premises. During the demonstration, activists allegedly harassed journalists covering the event, obstructing video recording and demanding the deletion of captured footage.

Akhtar denied inciting a protest, claiming he visited the SP office to lodge a formal complaint after traffic police seized his keys and mobile phone, insisting his motorcycle was properly registered.

Additional Superintendent of Police ANM Wasim Firoz arrived at the scene to negotiate with the demonstrators and de-escalate the situation.

"The vehicle was impounded as part of a regular drive because it lacked proper registration documents," said ASP Firoz. "While around 50 to 60 activists attempted to create a disturbance and used inappropriate language with officers, the matter was eventually resolved through discussion."

Chapainawabganj District JCD President Mim Fazle Azim acknowledged that the entire incident stemmed from a misunderstanding and confirmed that the issue had been resolved with law enforcement. He also expressed regret over the harassment of media personnel, describing the obstruction as an unintended error.
