Reports circulating on social media and select news outlets claiming that six people died in a stampede during a fire at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) are entirely false, Mymensingh Divisional Commissioner Humayun Kabir confirmed to the media.

Addressing a press briefing around 12:30 AM on Tuesday (September 15), the Divisional Commissioner clarified the situation following widespread panic caused by unverified reports.

"The information spreading regarding the death of six people due to a stampede during the fire is completely untrue," Kabir stated. "The two bodies present in the emergency department were routine medical deaths unrelated to the incident. Authorities are currently verifying details regarding two additional reported deaths."

The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 PM on Monday when a fire broke out inside an out-of-service elevator in the hospital's new building. Thick smoke quickly rose up to the eighth floor, triggering panic among patients and their relatives.

At least 20 people sustained minor injuries while attempting to evacuate down the stairwells amid the rush.

Four firefighting units—three from Mymensingh Sadar and one from Bangladesh Agricultural University—responded to the scene and brought the blaze fully under control within an hour. Hospital security personnel and emergency responders assisted in evacuating patients, including women and children, to safety.

The Divisional Commissioner's statement aims to clear up public confusion and distress caused by initial misreports regarding the hospital emergency.
