Biman fleet expansion plan underway: Aviation Minister

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat announced on Tuesday (September 15) that the government will procure additional aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines based on recommendations from a High-Level Negotiation Committee.

He disclosed the plan during a courtesy meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke at his ministry office.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, both sides held detailed discussions on strengthening bilateral ties, modernizing Biman, and proceeding with Airbus aircraft purchases.

The minister pointed out that the fleet shortfall is being addressed on an emergency basis. He added that actual aircraft procurement will strictly follow expert evaluation reports from the negotiation committee.

Addressing cargo transport challenges, the minister noted that the European Union imposed High Risk Cargo and Mail (HRCM) status on Bangladesh in 2017, increasing both operational time and costs. The current administration has initiated steps to revoke this status.

He highlighted that Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) are being installed at major airports as required. Following satisfactory ratings in recent audits at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Osmani International Airport, the government expects the EU to lift the restriction.

The meeting also covered proposal details regarding Menzies Aviation's interest in collaborating with Biman for ground handling operations at the Third Terminal.
