A madrasa teacher was killed after being hit by a speeding bus in Babuganj, Barishal, on Tuesday, prompting students to block the Dhaka-Barishal highway for nearly an hour.

Rehana Begum, 45, an assistant moulavi (Qari) at Rakudia Dakhil Madrasa, was crossing the highway near the slope of Dwarika-Shikarpur Bridge to reach the madrasa when a Dhaka-bound bus operated by Labiba Company under the name Ahnaf Paribahan struck her around 9:40am.

She suffered serious injuries to her head and other parts of her body. Teachers rescued her and took her to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where she died around 11:30am while undergoing treatment due to excessive bleeding.

She was the wife of Rakudia Dakhil Madrasa Superintendent Maulana Nasir Uddin.

Following news of her death, students blocked the highway demanding safer roads, legal action against the driver responsible and measures to control reckless driving.

Highway police and Babuganj police rushed to the scene. The blockade was lifted after police detained several Labiba Company buses, and traffic movement later returned to normal.

Babuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said necessary legal action over the accident was under way.
