Youth hacked, shot dead in broad daylight in Keraniganj

A 25-year-old man was hacked and shot dead in broad daylight in Keraniganj on Tuesday, allegedly over a previous dispute, police said.

The victim, Farhad Hossain, was attacked by a group of people in the Arshinagar area around 2:30 PM. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 4:30 PM.

Police said Farhad was a member of the ‘Patali Group’, a teenage gang based in the Mohammadpur-Rayerbazar area.

Inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the victim died from injuries caused by gunshots and sharp weapons. His body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Farhad’s friend Sakib said Farhad was involved in the fish and clothing businesses. He had gone to a salon near Basila Bridge for a haircut when the attackers allegedly surrounded him.

Sakib alleged that several people, led by Sabbir and including Sagar, Habib and Arman, attacked Farhad. They allegedly shot him before hacking him repeatedly with sharp weapons and fleeing the scene.

CCTV footage from the area shows several youths carrying a pistol and machetes entering a building. Two people are later seen running out, followed by a bloodied man being dragged outside. The attackers then allegedly continued hacking him with machetes, while one of them was seen carrying a firearm.

Farhad was the son of Faruk Mia of Dularhat village in Chor Fashion upazila of Bhola. He lived with his family in Arshinagar, Keraniganj.

The killing comes five months after Emon alias Alex Emon, leader of the ‘Alex Group’, was hacked to death amid a turf war between two teenage gangs in Mohammadpur on April 12. Several people were arrested in connection with the murder and are now in jail.
