Farmer dies as lightning strikes while fishing in Meghna

A farmer died after being struck by lightning while fishing in the Meghna River.

His body was found floating near the riverbank in the Jahajmara area of Sandwip on Tuesday morning, September 15. Local residents later recovered the body.

The deceased was identified as Md. Ershad, 45, son of Abdus Sobhan of South Char Clark village in Ward No. 7 of Char Clark Union. He was a farmer by profession and the father of four children.

His brother-in-law, Md. Nur Uddin said, "Ershad worked in agriculture and also fished in the Meghna River using a push net, mainly catching shrimp and other fish."

He went to the Jahajmara area of Sandwip on Sunday to fish and had not been in contact with his family since then. Around 8:00 AM on Tuesday, locals spotted his body floating in the river with the fishing net.

According to Nur Uddin, there were no visible injury marks on Ershad’s body. The family believes he died after being struck by lightning while fishing.

Char Jabbar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Hasan said, "police had spoken with the victim’s relatives. They were bringing the body to the shore."

If no signs of injury were found after examining the body, it would be handed over to the family. An unnatural death case would be filed in connection with the incident.
