Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated on Wednesday (September 16) that the modernization of the police force has not kept pace with the changing nature of crime.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 43rd founding anniversary program of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), the minister highlighted the necessity of shifting toward digital technology to combat evolving offense patterns.

He announced government plans to establish modern cyber security labs at both the police station and upazila levels to strengthen local law enforcement capabilities.

Addressing the challenges faced by investigative journalists, the Home Minister noted that crime reporters perform their duties under constant risk and suggested introducing a risk allowance for them. He also emphasized the urgent need to amend existing legal frameworks, observing that offenders frequently secure bail under current laws shortly after their arrest.

The minister identified gambling and illegal drugs as key drivers behind most youth-related offenses, adding that research is underway to address the root causes of crime before implementing eradication measures.
