Farmers take fertiliser from dealer's warehouse in Kurigram

Farmers took sacks of fertiliser from a dealer's warehouse in Char Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram on Wednesday amid allegations of irregularities in distribution.

The incident took place at the Safi Enterprise dealer point at Rajibpur Bazar in the morning. Farmers waiting outside became agitated after learning that the dealer was issuing fertiliser slips from his home.

They feared they would not get fertiliser and entered the warehouse, taking away several sacks, according to people present at the scene.

However, acting Char Rajibpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sayekul Hasan Khan denied that farmers had taken fertiliser by force. He said some farmers had tried to create disorder and that the administration and police brought the situation under control.

Farmers were still demonstrating at Rajibpur Bazar around 1:00 PM, demanding punishment of the dealer and cancellation of his dealership.

Safi Enterprise owner Safi Alam is a former vice-president of the upazila BNP and a current member of its convening committee. He blamed third parties for the disorder.

Farmers said fertiliser was scheduled to be distributed to farmers from wards 2, 3 and 4 of the union. They had been waiting outside the dealer point since early morning, but distribution did not start at the scheduled time.

They later learned that Safi Alam was issuing fertiliser slips from his home and that people with those slips were collecting fertiliser. This angered the waiting farmers, who then entered the warehouse and took away sacks.

Safi Alam said 500 sacks of urea had been kept in the warehouse for distribution, while several hundred more people had gathered for fertiliser.

He said he was issuing slips from his nearby home to manage the crowd and facilitate distribution. He also said he had informed the upazila administration and agriculture department about the arrangement.

According to Safi, some people prevented slip-holding farmers from collecting fertiliser and attacked the warehouse. He said several sacks were taken away, although some had later been recovered.

Safi alleged that some identified Awami League members had instigated the disorder and taken away some sacks. He said he had given their names to the officer-in-charge of the police station.

The local administration, however, gave a different account. While the dealer said sacks had been taken from his warehouse, the administration said no fertiliser was looted.

UNO Sayekul Hasan Khan said some farmers had tried to create disorder but the administration and police quickly brought the situation under control. He said fertiliser was later distributed properly.

Asked about allegations of irregularities against the dealer, the UNO said action would be taken if an investigation found any irregularities.

Rajibpur Police Station OC Shahinur Alam said there had been an attempt to take away fertiliser but police prevented it. He said distribution was later completed properly.

Farmers have repeatedly protested over fertiliser in several upazilas of Kurigram during the Aman season. Earlier, farmers took fertiliser after breaking into dealers' warehouses in Bhurungamari and Roumari upazilas. There have also been several protests over fertiliser in Nageshwari upazila.

The agriculture department, however, said fertiliser had been allocated and supplied according to demand and that there was no shortage in the district. It said the allocation was higher than last year.

The district also received an additional allocation of 500 tonnes of urea in September on top of the regular monthly allocation.
