Zero tolerance for corruption in PWD: State Minister Monzoor

BARISHAL, Sept 16: State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahammad Sohel Monzoor, MP, said the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, acknowledging that the Public Works Department (PWD) had been widely affected by corruption in the past.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a foundation stone-laying ceremony for construction of a new Bandar Police Station building for the Barishal Metropolitan Police on Wednesday afternoon.

“We have zero tolerance for corruption. The PWD was highly corrupt in the past. We are moving toward overcoming that situation,” Monzoor said.

Speaking about law and order, he said the situation had deteriorated to a critical level at one point but that law enforcement agencies are working to improve it. He also stressed the need to combat drug abuse.
Monzoor urged journalists to play a stronger role in raising public awareness, saying their reporting could help free the country and its people from the devastating impact of drugs.

Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Rayhan Mohammad Saleh and senior police officials attended the event.

The government recently assigned ministers, state ministers and whips to oversee law and order, corruption control, drug prevention and government activities in different districts. Monzoor was assigned to oversee Barishal, Bhola and Jhalakathi.
