Couple Gets Life Sentence in Drug Case

A court in Jashore has sentenced a couple to life imprisonment with hard labour and fined them Tk 5,000 each in a drug case filed in Sharsha.

Jashore Special District and Sessions Judge SM Nurul Islam delivered the verdict on Thursday (September 17). The convicts are Babu Mia and his wife, Rekha Khatun.

According to the case details, BGB members raided Babu’s house in Pakshia Shimultala on November 29, 2016, acting on a tip-off about drugs. The couple fled through the back of the house.

The BGB team later searched the house and recovered 96 bottles of Phensedyl from a white plastic sack hidden inside the kitchen stove.

BGB Subedar Md Abdus Salam filed the case with Sharsha Police Station. After a lengthy trial, the court found the couple guilty and sentenced each to life imprisonment, a Tk 5,000 fine, and six months’ imprisonment in default.

Both convicts are currently in jail.
