DU punishes ex-DUCSU leader for using ChatGPT in exam

Dhaka University has penalized former DUCSU and Shibir leader Md Ferdaus for using the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to cheat during an examination.

The university syndicate handed down a "Exam + 1" punishment to Ferdaus, an executive member of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall union and a Mass Communication and Journalism student. Under this disciplinary measure, the syndicate canceled his exam for Course 107 and barred him from sitting for any university examinations for the next full academic year.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 AM during the retake exam for Course 107. Invigilators caught Ferdaus red-handed in the department corridor after he left the exam hall on the pretext of using the washroom, obtained a smartphone from a senior student, and searched for exam answers using ChatGPT.

A check of the phone's search history confirmed the exact test questions were searched, prompting invigilators to report his script to the Controller of Examinations office.

Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam chaired the syndicate meeting that finalized the disciplinary action following recommendations from the Disciplinary Board. Acting Controller of Examinations Dr Himadri Shekhar Chakraborty confirmed the order through an official notice.

The syndicate also penalized 63 other students from various departments and affiliated institutes for academic misconduct in the same meeting. General students expressed anger over the unethical conduct of a student representative and urged action against the accomplice.
