Police detained 23 people during what they described as a secret meeting at Tejgaon Mosque in Farmgate, Dhaka, on Friday.
A senior official of the Tejgaon Division confirmed the matter at around 4:15 PM.
The official said the 23 were detained based on intelligence information. Their organisational affiliations have not yet been confirmed, and police are verifying their identities and backgrounds.
Law enforcement sources said the detainees were suspected of having links to an extremist organisation. Several teams of the police and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit were at the scene.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn-e-Mizan said 23 people were detained from Tejgaon Mosque during a secret meeting on suspicion of being militants.
He said they were detained based on intelligence information and that verification was under way.
