Three student killed including shooter in Philippines school

Three people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting at a high school in Banga city in the southern Philippines’ Mindanao province on Friday.
Banga Mayor Albert Palencia said two of the deceased were 14-year-old students, while the 16-year-old shooter was also killed. Four of the injured students were in critical condition, he added.
The shooting took place at Banga National High School after noon on Friday.
In a statement, the Philippine Department of Education said it was “deeply concerned” over the incident.
The attack marks the third fatal shooting at an educational institution in the Philippines since June this year.
Gun-related crimes are relatively common in the Philippines, which has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in the region. However, shootings at educational institutions are relatively uncommon.
The Department of Education said, “Our top priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers and school personnel.” It added that it was maintaining close communication with authorities to gather more information and provide necessary assistance.
The department urged everyone to remain calm while the investigation is underway and warned against spreading unverified information.
Mayor Palencia told Reuters that the teenage shooter had told his friends to go home during lunchtime, saying, “I will carry out my plan right after lunch.”
“After finishing his meal, he began firing indiscriminately at students. After shooting at least 10 students, he took his own life,” the mayor said.
Following the incident, classes at all educational institutions across Banga municipality were suspended, according to the local disaster management authority.
The Philippine Red Cross said it received the report at around 2:00 PM local time and immediately dispatched an ambulance with four paramedics to provide emergency medical assistance.
Local media reported that police reached the scene and launched an investigation.
Earlier in June, three students were killed and several others injured when a classmate opened fire at a high school in the central Philippines. Investigators reportedly suspected that the attack was linked to anger over bullying.
