Mob vandalises home of accused in child rape-murder case in Pabna

A mob vandalised the home of the prime accused arrested in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old third-grader in Pabna.

Police said residents of Kulunia village under Dogachhi Union in Pabna Sadar upazila attacked and vandalised Pramanik’s house after Friday prayers on September 18.

A local eyewitness, speaking on condition of anonymity, said anger and tension had gripped the area following the child’s death. A large number of people gathered after the Juma prayer and attacked the house.

Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam confirmed the incident, saying police had been deployed at the scene beforehand. However, the mob outnumbered the police, preventing them from stopping the vandalism initially. Additional police later arrived and brought the situation under control.

Kamrunnahar Koli went missing after leaving her home on the evening of September 9. Despite searches by her family, she could not be found, prompting them to file a general diary with the police.

Seven days later, on the morning of September 16, police recovered her body stuffed inside a sack from a ditch near her home in Kulunia village.

Police subsequently arrested Koli’s neighbour Mustofa Pramanik and his tenant, Yasin, in connection with the incident.

At a press conference on Thursday, Pabna Superintendent of Police Abu Ashraf said the investigation found that the accused had taken Koli to a room behind Pramanik’s grocery shop on the day of the incident. Police said she was raped and killed there.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and legal action is being taken against those involved in the killing.
