Two children drown to death in Satkhira’s Kaliganj

Two children were died after drowning in a pond near their homes in Sonatala village of Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were Abdullah, 8, son of Azgar Ali of Sonatala village under Dakshin Sreepur Union, and Iqbal Hossain, 7, son of Aminur Biswas of Baliadanga village in neighbouring Krishnanagar Union.

According to family members and locals, Iqbal had come to his maternal grandfather’s house in Sonatala village to visit relatives. Around the time family members went to attend the Juma prayer on Friday, Iqbal and Abdullah went near a pond belonging to Abu Bakkar Sheikh beside the house.

At one point, the two children accidentally fell into the pond and drowned.

The incident was first noticed by Nahar Begum, wife of local resident Akbar Gazi. She saw the children in the water and raised an alarm, prompting nearby residents to rush to the spot

Locals later recovered the two children from the pond, but they had already died.

After being informed, Kaliganj Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sushanta Kumar Ghosh visited the scene and took stock of the situation.
