Bangladesh embassy warns Bahrain expats to follow local laws, watch social media

Bangladeshis may use social media to stay connected with family and friends and for positive communication. However, they have been advised to follow their employers’ policies before posting any information, photos or videos related to their jobs, workplaces or employers.

The embassy also urged expatriates to remain cautious about strangers, unknown links, files and messages and to guard against scams and phishing attempts. They were advised to verify information before sharing photos, videos or other content online and to avoid suspicious or provocative activities.

The advisory specifically warned against sharing, liking, commenting on or promoting posts, photos, videos or messages linked to terrorism, extremism or banned organisations. Expatriates were also urged to refrain from spreading rumours, misinformation or hate speech.

The embassy advised Bangladeshis to exercise particular caution when posting about international conflicts, including the Israel-Palestine and Iran-Israel conflicts, and not to share or promote provocative or controversial content that could violate Bahraini law.

They were further advised not to participate in any political or online campaign prohibited in Bahrain and not to donate money to individuals, organisations or online fundraising campaigns without proper verification.

The embassy also warned against taking or publishing photographs or videos of workplaces, airports, ports, government facilities or security-related locations where such activity may be restricted.

Expatriates were advised not to post sensitive personal information, including their own or others’ passports, visas, national identity cards and bank details-- on social media.

The advisory also urged Bangladeshis to avoid posts, comments or online arguments that could incite religious, ethnic or racial hatred.

The embassy warned expatriates to stay away from fraudulent job advertisements, illegal visa schemes, get-rich-quick offers and suspicious investment or cryptocurrency scams.

It also advised them not to post comments, reactions or other content online that supports or glorifies crime, violence or illegal activities.
