MP Monirul calls for Apratim murder trial within three months

Cumilla-6 MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury has urged the Prime Minister and Home Minister to ensure that the trial in the murder of Ishiat Shahriar Apratim, the only son of Cumilla University teacher Dr Nahida Begum, is completed within three months.

He made the call while speaking to journalists after visiting the site near Cumilla University where Apratim’s body was recovered on Saturday (September 19).

Monirul Haque said, “As the MP of this area, I am ashamed and apologise. We could not even protect these innocent children. People die, but I have never seen such a tragic death. An innocent child, only 13 years old. I urge the Prime Minister and Home Minister to identify and arrest the perpetrator immediately and complete the trial within 90 days.”

Speaking emotionally, he said, “Can someone kill an innocent child like this for an iPhone? I could never have imagined it. What kind of country have we built? As a freedom fighter, I am ashamed.”

He said, “My daughters call me from abroad and ask, ‘Father, what happened?’ What answer can I give them? I have no answer. I can only say, Home Minister, please look into this. Protect the teenagers from these people. Otherwise, the nation will be in danger.”

He further said he had spoken to the superintendent of police and requested the immediate arrest of those responsible. “He said they are taking effective measures,” the MP added.

Cumilla University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M M Shariful Karim and other university teachers were present at the time.
