A 38-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped after her ninth-grade son was held at gunpoint in Gafargaon, Mymensingh.
The incident took place at a migrant worker’s house around 8pm on Thursday. Police detained a 23-year-old man, Rajib, later that night.
According to police and the victim, five youths entered the house after asking for water and an axe. They allegedly held the woman’s son at gunpoint, vandalised the house and looted Tk 5 lakh, gold jewellery and other valuables.
The woman alleged that she was then sexually assaulted. She also claimed Rajib recorded the incident on his phone and threatened to share the video on social media. The suspects allegedly demanded another Tk 2 lakh within three days.
Neighbours informed police after hearing the victims’ cries. Police later detained Rajib from an area about one kilometre from the scene. The other four suspects fled.
Additional Superintendent of Police Montosh Biswas said the allegations are being investigated and efforts are underway to arrest the other suspects. Police are also examining medical reports and other evidence to establish what happened.
