Five people, including a woman, suffered burn injuries after petrol was allegedly set on fire inside a room during a family dispute in the Shyambazar Chamar Tuli area of Sutrapur in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM. The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery later in the evening.
The injured were identified as Siddiq Bepari, 60, his son Mohammad Emon, 26, a Saudi expatriate, his nephew Rajib, 38, and nephew and niece Arifur Rahman Dhulu, 35, and Tania Akter, 20.
According to family members, a dispute broke out between Tania and Emon’s sister Sultana on Friday over dirty water that had accumulated in front of their house. Sultana later informed Emon, who returned from Saudi Arabia that day.
Arifur’s wife Sonia Akter said Emon threatened to kill everyone during another argument on Saturday afternoon. He then allegedly poured petrol inside his room and set it on fire, leaving all five people injured.
Dr Sultan Mahmud, a resident physician at the burn institute, said Emon suffered burns to 90% of his body, Tania 60%, Siddiq 35%, Rajib 15% and Arifur 8%.
Emon, Tania, Siddiq and Rajib were shifted to the intensive care unit due to the severity of their injuries. Arifur is being treated under observation in the emergency department.
