ICT issues warrants for ex-DU VC Maksud Kamal, Zafar Iqbal

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday issued arrest warrants for five people, including former Dhaka University vice-chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal and academic and writer Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, in a case over alleged attacks on Dhaka University students during the July 2024 uprising.

The tribunal took cognisance of the formal charges against all eight accused and subsequently issued arrest warrants for the five who are currently at large.

The case concerns allegations of attacks on protesting students at Dhaka University that allegedly left five people dead and around 300 injured.

Prosecutors have accused Maksud Kamal of directly inciting and instructing attacks on students in an effort to suppress the movement. They have also alleged that Zafar Iqbal and Dhaka University Professor AKM Jamal Uddin made statements referring to protesters as “razakars” and encouraged actions against them.

The prosecution had earlier filed formal charges against eight people before ICT-1, accusing them of incitement, conspiracy, attempt and abetment in connection with attacks on protesters during the July uprising.
