Former Union Parishad member Surman Reza was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Tangail on Sunday.
The incident took place around noon at an abandoned filling station in Darun area of Gharinda Union on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway.
Surman, son of Hanif Reza of Bhatchanda village in Gala Union, had served as a UP member once and was also involved in business.
His brother Halim Reza said the family could not understand what had happened. He demanded a proper investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Tangail Sadar Circle HM Mahbub Rezwan Siddiqui said police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Tangail General Hospital for autopsy.
The actual motive behind the killing will be known after the investigation, he said.
