20-month-old girl rescued after alleged sale attempt

Police rescued a 20-month-old girl in Chattogram after her mother alleged that her husband had taken the child out of their home to sell her to fund his drug use.

The incident took place around 10:30 PM on Saturday in West Madarbari area under Sadarghat Police Station. Police rescued the child from Jugi Chand Mosque Lane in West Madarbari about two hours later and handed her over to her mother.

Sadarghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ekram Ullah said the child's mother, Sima, 26, called the national emergency service 999 and alleged that her husband, Lokman Hossain Sagar, 27, had forcibly taken their daughter Fatema Akter from their home to sell her.

She also alleged that Sagar was addicted to drugs.

Police said Sima and Sagar live at the home of one Bacchu Mia in the Panir Tanki area under Sadarghat Police Station. According to the complaint, Sagar left home with their daughter on Saturday night intending to sell her to arrange money for drugs.

After receiving the call, police launched an operation to rescue the child. She was found in the custody of Sagar's maternal cousin at Jugi Chand Mosque Lane about two hours later and was subsequently handed over to her mother.

The OC said Sagar had told his maternal cousin that he intended to sell his daughter. The cousin then took the child from Sagar and kept her in his custody.

Sima lodged the complaint but did not file a case against her husband after the child was rescued, the OC said.
