Former Jamaat leader arrested over alleged sexual assault of child

Police have arrested a former Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Noakhali’s Begumganj for allegedly sexually assaulting a fifth-grade student.

The accused, Md Alamgir Hossain Farazi, 45, was arrested from his home in West Khanpur village under Sharifpur Union around 11:30 PM on Saturday, Begumganj Model Police Station OC Md Shamsuzzaman said on Sunday.

According to the case and the victim’s family, the child went to Alamgir’s medicine shop at Hasanhat Bazar on September 13 complaining of a headache. Alamgir allegedly took the child to a room behind the shop, saying that he could cure the headache through spiritual healing, and sexually assaulted him there. He allegedly threatened the child with death if he disclosed the incident.

The child later told his family about the alleged assault after experiencing physical pain. His father subsequently filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Alamgir previously served as treasurer, secretary and president of Jamaat’s Ward 4 unit in Sharifpur Union. A local Jamaat leader said he held those positions until 2022 and is currently inactive and not involved in party activities.

The Jamaat leader also said Alamgir has denied the allegation, claiming that a group had arranged the accusation after demanding money from him.

Police said Alamgir will be shown arrested in the case and produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
