DUCSU highlights progress as major student projects remain stalled

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has highlighted several achievements in its one-year activity and accountability report, while acknowledging delays in implementing a number of major student welfare projects.

DUCSU General Secretary and Shibir publicity secretary SM Farhad sent the 71-page report to reporters on Thursday.

According to the report, DUCSU helped initiate projects worth Tk 2,841 crore for five new residential halls and extensions to 10 existing halls. A proposed 1,500-seat women’s hall, estimated to cost Tk 244 crore, is also mentioned. However, much of the housing-related work remains at the planning or pre-construction stage.

The report also claims improvements in residential facilities, including air-conditioning in 13 halls and computer laboratories in three halls, with eight more nearing completion.

DUCSU said nearly Tk 3 crore was spent on upgrading the university’s Medical Center, while 20,500 students received health tests and other services.

In transport, the union highlighted a Friday bus service, additional evening trips, new stops and a trial of a bus-tracking app. However, some planned buses could not be purchased due to government restrictions.

Several other projects remain stalled, including a women’s gymnasium that received Tk 65 lakh but has not opened and a Tk 2 crore central playground renovation project that remains blocked despite funding.

Students also questioned the report’s lack of independent assessments, detailed expenditure statements and project completion data.

Nazmus Shakib Adib, a 2020-21 session student, said claims about the absence of political control over halls and the return of guest-room and ganaroom culture require independent monitoring and evidence.

Sabbir Ahmed, a 2021-22 session student, said DUCSU should publish project-wise budgets, deadlines, responsible offices, completion rates and reasons for delays.

The report ultimately presents an uneven picture, showing progress in some areas while several major student welfare initiatives remain dependent on university administration and funding.
