NCTB to add Khaleda Zia's 1990 uprising role in textbooks

The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) is introducing major historical revisions and four new subjects for the 2027 academic year.

A Prothom Alo report cited, the revised curriculum will incorporate detailed sections on the Liberation War sector commanders, brigade forces, biographies of the seven Bir Sreshthos, and the events of November 7, 1975.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's role in the 1990 mass uprising and former President Ziaur Rahman's essay "Memories of the War of Independence" (Swadhinata Juddher Smriti) will also be included.

The National Curriculum Coordination Committee (NCCC) has already approved the inclusion of Ziaur Rahman's historical memoir in Class IX and X Bangla literature textbooks.

Textbooks will also recognize the historical roles of prominent political figures including Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Tajuddin Ahmad.

Beyond history, ICT textbooks will introduce dedicated chapters on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prepare students for rapid technological advances.

In addition, four new practical books will be introduced—two for Class IV ('Culture of Bangladesh' and 'Sports') and two for Class VI ('My Vocational Education' and 'Joyful Learning').

These new textbooks will feature 710 illustrations to aid visual learning and will rely on continuous assessment rather than annual written exams.

The government plans to print nearly 310 million copies across primary and secondary levels at an estimated cost of BDT 1,879 crore.
