India approves Asad Alam Siam as Bangladesh new envoy

India has formally approved the appointment of Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam as the country's next High Commissioner to India, according to sources by Hindustan Times.

Siam, a career diplomat from the 1995 batch of the Bangladesh Foreign Service, will succeed Riaz Hamidullah in New Delhi.

Hamidullah is being reassigned as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

The formal consent, handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, puts an end to speculation regarding delays from the Indian side.

Former Bangladeshi envoy to the UN in New York, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, is expected to assume the post of Foreign Secretary.

Siam previously served as Bangladesh's Ambassador to the US before becoming Foreign Secretary in June 2025, alongside earlier postings as Ambassador to Austria and the Philippines.

Dhaka's decision to appoint its top senior diplomat comes after India posted former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as its High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Siam's mandate will focus on navigating and rebuilding bilateral relations between Dhaka and New Delhi following recent political shifts.
