Court bars ex-minister Nowfel’s wife from leaving country

A Dhaka court on Tuesday (September 22) imposed a travel ban on Emma Claire Burton, wife of former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, in a corruption case.

Acting Judge Md Alamgir of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the ACC, Burton allegedly failed to submit her wealth statement within the stipulated time and acquired assets worth Tk 84.35 lakh inconsistent with her known sources of income. The ACC filed the case on June 4 last year.

The investigation officer said there was information that Burton was attempting to leave the country secretly, which could hamper the investigation and collection of relevant documents.

The court had earlier barred Nowfel from leaving the country on August 29, 2024.
