Passengers, transport workers suffer as Hili bus fares rise

Local bus fares on Hili-Dinajpur and Hili-Joypurhat routes have been increased following the recent surge in fuel prices, leaving both commuters and transport operators in distress.

Under the revised rates, the fare for the Hili-Dinajpur route has been increased by BDT 20, bringing the total fare to BDT 170.

Similarly, the Hili-Joypurhat fare has seen a BDT 10 increase, raising the current fare to BDT 60.

However, transport operators confirmed that fares for long-distance buses originating from Hili remain unchanged for now.

Transport workers reported that several owners have suspended operations on local routes due to soaring fuel costs.

The number of active buses on the Hili-Joypurhat route has dropped sharply from 32 to just 12 or 13 daily, causing severe commuter distress and leaving many transport workers unemployed.

Bus drivers and workers urged the government to urgently fix standardized bus fare structures aligned with current fuel prices to restore order for owners, workers, and passengers alike.
