Two arrested within 24 hours over cousin’s killing

Two accused in a murder case over a land dispute in Rampal, Bagerhat, have been arrested within 24 hours of the case being filed.

The accused are Baki Billah Sheikh, 47, son of Jafar Sheikh, and Masum Billah Sheikh, 52, both from Kismat Chanditala village in Rampal.

A team of SRB-6 সদর Company arrested them during an operation in Laripara area under Phultala Police Station in Khulna at around 3:30am on Tuesday. SRB-6 Media Officer Syed Fazlur Rahman confirmed the matter.

According to SRB-6, the two sides had a longstanding dispute over fish enclosures and residential land.

On September 21, the accused allegedly abused and insulted the complainant’s father on a brick-paved road in front of his house in Chanditala village.

At that time, the complainant’s younger brother, Sheikh Ahad Ahmed Itu, 23, came out of the house and was allegedly beaten indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured, according to the case statement.

Local people later rescued him and took him to Rampal Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

Following the incident, the victim’s brother, Sheikh Rahat, filed a murder case with Rampal Police Station.

SRB-6 Media Officer Syed Fazlur Rahman said the accused were traced after analysing the case statement. They were later arrested in a raid in Laripara area of Phultala.

The two accused were subsequently handed over to Rampal Police Station for further legal action.
