More Aedes larvae found in less-populated areas, dengue cases lower: DNCC administrator

More Aedes mosquito larvae are being found in areas of Dhaka with relatively low population and footfall, while dengue cases remain comparatively low in those areas, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after inaugurating the ‘Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign-2026’ at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University on Tuesday morning.

The DNCC administrator said, "Aedes larvae were found in 60-70% of inspected areas, although the number of dengue patients in those areas was comparatively low. He attributed the situation to concerted efforts to control the mosquito population."

Shafiqul Islam said, "special drives were being conducted at government offices, courts, information buildings, markets and other places where fewer people gather but stagnant water is likely to accumulate. Legal action is being taken against those responsible when larvae are found, and mobile courts are being conducted when necessary."

He said, "two DNCC workers had already been temporarily suspended over alleged negligence in mosquito-control activities. The mosquito-control programme is being monitored regularly, while the pesticides used are tested in laboratories and approved by experts before application, he added.

The DNCC administrator called for greater cooperation from city residents, saying the city corporation alone cannot control dengue. Three types of awareness leaflets are being distributed to households and institutions, while an open letter has also been issued seeking residents’ cooperation.

He further said ‘central traps’ were being installed at hospitals when necessary to monitor mosquito presence. Such traps will be used at facilities including Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and the Children’s Hospital.

The dengue prevention and cleanliness campaign was launched at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University to strengthen dengue prevention, cleanliness and public awareness.

Madarpur-3 lawmaker Anisur Rahman Talukdar, reserved women’s seat-16 lawmaker Engineer Sanjida Islam Tuli, university Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Abdul Latif, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Belal Hossain, Treasurer Prof Muhammad Abul Bashar and DNCC health department officials attended the programme.
