All educational institutions to remain closed Wednesday

All educational institutions across Bangladesh will remain closed on Wednesday, September 23, on the occasion of Fateha-e-Yazdaham.

No classes or examinations will be held on the day, according to the revised annual holiday calendar for educational institutions.

The holiday was initially scheduled for Thursday, September 24. However, the date was revised following the decision of the Islamic Foundation, with the Secondary and Higher Education Division issuing a notification on September 20.

The notification said the holiday date in the 2026 academic calendar had been changed from September 24 to September 23.

The holiday will apply to primary schools, government and private secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions across the country.

Universities, however, may decide separately whether to observe the holiday, with individual institutions usually issuing notices in advance.

Fateha-e-Yazdaham is observed on the 11th day of Rabi al-Thani in the Islamic calendar. The occasion is traditionally observed as the death anniversary of Sufi saint Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA), who died on 11 Rabi al-Thani in 561 AH. It is also known as Gyarvi Sharif in parts of South Asia.
