Sylhet triple murder: PBI takes Babul Mia on remand

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has taken Babul Mia, the sole accused arrested in the Sylhet triple murder case, on a fresh two-day remand for questioning.
Babul was produced before the Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, when investigating officer PBI Inspector Mohammad Morsalin sought a five-day remand.
After a hearing, Judge Farhana Sultana granted two days’ remand.
PBI Sylhet Special Superintendent of Police Md Shahadat Hossain said Babul was taken into remand for questioning in the interest of the investigation.
The PBI took over the investigation on September 16. Investigators have since collected and seized the CCTV hard drive from the house where the killings took place and started questioning witnesses.
Investigators are focusing on the possible motive and whether anyone else was involved. They are particularly examining whether Babul had a personal relationship with domestic worker Tahmina Begum and whether there was a long-standing land dispute between him and slain businessman M Abdus Sattar.
On August 12, Sattar, his wife Suraiya Begum and their domestic worker Tahmina Begum were hacked and stabbed to death at their apartment in Nikunja Villa in Sylhet’s Raynagar area.
Police arrested Babul, 40, a painter and butcher by profession, from a colony in the Raynagar Rajbari area on the same day.
Police initially claimed that Babul had a romantic relationship with Tahmina and killed her after she rejected an alleged proposal, before killing Sattar and Suraiya after they witnessed the incident. However, Babul later gave a different account in his statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to court sources.
According to the statement, Babul entered the house intending to steal because of pressure over house rent. He allegedly stabbed Tahmina after she saw him and screamed, and later killed Sattar and Suraiya.
The victim’s family had earlier expressed concern over the investigation and demanded an impartial probe. Following their meeting with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in Sylhet on September 1, the investigation was subsequently handed over to the PBI.
The PBI said it is investigating the actual motive behind the killings and whether anyone else was involved in the crime.
