Biman to sign deal with Boeing for 11 more aircraft

Bangladesh’s national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines is set to sign a deal with US aircraft maker Boeing to purchase 11 more aircraft on Wednesday in New York, according to Biman sources.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed at 4:15 PM local time during the 81st UN General Assembly, which is 2:15 AM Bangladesh time on Thursday.

Biman board chairman Rumi Akhter Hossain is expected to sign the agreement. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir are also expected to attend the signing ceremony.

Following the signing, Boeing Global President Dr Brendan Nelson is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, sources said.

On April 30, Biman signed a $3.7 billion deal with Boeing for 14 aircraft—eight 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9s and four 737-8s.

With Wednesday’s agreement, Biman’s planned Boeing fleet purchase will rise to 25 aircraft.

However, details of the 11 new aircraft, including their models, prices, financing arrangements and delivery schedules, have yet to be disclosed.
