No decision yet to raise train fares: Railways Minister

Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said the government has not yet decided to increase train fares despite the recent rise in fuel prices.
However, he said the ministry was facing pressure to raise fares as keeping them unchanged could further increase losses in the railway sector.
The minister made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after a meeting with launch owners at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam said train fares were not increased when diesel prices rose by Tk 15 previously, but there was now pressure to raise fares after fuel prices increased by another Tk 20.
“We incur losses in the railway sector. Given the rise in fuel prices, there is pressure from the Railway Ministry to increase fares,” he said.
He said fares had not been increased for 10 years and were also kept unchanged after the previous fuel price hike.
The minister said the government was trying to avoid raising fares and asked railway officials and those responsible for fare collection to make every effort to adjust costs without increasing fares.
“If it becomes absolutely impossible to operate the railway without increasing fares, the increase may be made reasonably,” he said.
He also referred to losses in ferry operations and said there had been demands to raise ferry fares to a reasonable level after keeping them unchanged for a long time.
The minister said the government was taking the maximum pressure and risk to avoid increasing fares.
“However, if it becomes unavoidable, you will be informed. The fares will certainly be increased reasonably and with your knowledge. But so far, we have not decided to increase train fares,” he said.
