Sustainable embankment to be built in Kutubdia at Tk 932cr

A sustainable embankment will be built in Kutubdia, Cox’s Bazar, at an estimated cost of Tk 932 crore to protect coastal communities, farmland and property, State Minister for Water Resources Mohammad Farhad Hossain Azad MP said on Wednesday.

He made the remarks while inspecting the proposed project area at Romaipara in Polder-71 of Kutubdia.

The state minister said modern and sustainable embankments would be built in phases to protect the lives and property of coastal residents and agricultural land.

In the first phase, an initiative has been taken to construct around 6.5 kilometres of a ‘super dyke’ in Polder-71, he said.

Once implemented, the project will protect a large area of Kutubdia from tidal surges, high tides and coastal erosion.

The state minister spoke to local residents and heard about the current condition of the embankment and their long-standing problems. He was also briefed by officials on various aspects of the project and its implementation plan.

MP Alamgir Mohammad Mahafuz Ullah Farid, Water Resources Ministry Secretary Dr AKM Shahabuddin, Cox’s Bazar District Council Administrator ATM Nurul Bashar Chowdhury, Kutubdia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, Kutubdia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahabubul Haque, former president of Kutubdia upazila BNP Jalal Ahmed, upazila BNP convener Syed Ahmed Chowdhury and member secretary MA Salam Kutubi were present.

According to Bangladesh Water Development Board sources, Kutubdia has around 41 kilometres of coastal embankments. Under the first phase, a modern ‘super dyke’ will be constructed along about 6.5 kilometres in Polder-71.

Local residents have long been demanding the construction of a sustainable embankment in Kutubdia. They expressed hope that the new project would pave the way for meeting their long-standing demand.
