Woman attacked with hammer, gold chain stolen in Manikganj

A woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer and robbed of her gold chain after a person disguised as a beggar entered her flat in Manikganj town on Thursday.

The victim, identified as Hazera Begum, is undergoing treatment at Manikganj 250-Bed General Hospital.

The incident took place around 11:30 AM at a flat on the second floor of Baitul Aman Bhaban in the Uttar Sewta area of the municipality.

According to the victim’s family, Hazera was alone at home when a person wearing a burqa knocked on the door, claiming to be seeking alms. After she opened the door, the person allegedly attacked her with a hammer, striking her repeatedly on the head.

The attacker then allegedly snatched a gold chain weighing around one and a half bhori from her neck and fled.

Hazera’s daughter, Aleya Begum, said the person was carrying a plastic bag containing a small amount of rice, which led them to believe the person was a beggar.

Hearing Hazera’s screams, neighbours rushed to the flat and found her lying injured on the floor. Her family later took her to the hospital for treatment.

Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Monir Hossain said, "police were investigating the incident and reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the person involved."

“Legal proceedings are underway,” the OC said.
