20 students hospitalised after eating eggs in school meal in Thakurgaon

Twenty students fell ill and were hospitalised after eating eggs served as part of the midday meal at a school in Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon on Thursday.

The incident took place at Maharajpur Government Primary School in Palashbari around noon.

The students were taken to Baliadangi Upazila Health Complex after experiencing severe stomach pain, vomiting and dizziness. Doctors admitted all 20 students for treatment, said the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer, Md Sajib Mia.

According to the school and local sources, eggs were served along with other food items as part of the regular midday meal. Shortly after eating the eggs, several students began feeling unwell.

The incident has caused concern among other students and their parents.

Just two days earlier, around 34 students at another school in the same upazila had fallen ill and been hospitalised after eating midday meals.

However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the students fell ill due to food poisoning. Authorities said the cause would be determined after tests and an investigation.

District Administrator Rafiqul Islam said a five-member committee had already been formed to investigate the previous incident, and food samples had been sent to Dhaka for testing.

Regarding Thursday’s incident, he said, “It is extremely unfortunate that such an incident has happened again.” He assured that swift legal action would be taken and wished the hospitalised children a speedy recovery.
